Creating the ideal learning environment is the cornerstone to the accelerated learning process. The environment can significantly affect a person’s ability to learn at both the conscious and unconscious level. A comfortable, collaborative, and welcoming environment is key for optimal learning.
A positive and engaging environment sets the tone for learning and influences the way a person learns throughout the session. If the environment is restrictive and/or boring, the learning becomes difficult regardless of how well it is presented. Conversely, if the environment is comfortable, welcoming and engaging, it makes the learning experience much more pleasant, and thus ideal for learning.
The “environment” does not only include the physical space, such as the room, table, and chairs, but it also includes the emotional and social atmosphere. A relaxed, engaging, and fun atmosphere is essential for optimizing learning as it will generate positive emotions in the learners.
People learn best in a positive physical, emotional, and social environment.
Physical aspects would include everything from size of room, lighting, temperature, acoustics, seating arrangements, wall color, and types of seats.
Emotional aspects would include affect how a person feels about the area including the degree to which learners feel safe, welcomed, and empowered.
Social aspects would address how learners interact with others in the classroom including a collaborative approach, being welcomed and valued by others.
Accelerated learning emphasizes the physical aspects of the learning environment. If the room is a barren and windowless it will negatively affect a person’s ability to learn. In contrast, a bright, colorful room with windows that let in natural light and walls that are decorated with colorful posters will positively affect a person’s ability to learn.
The classroom environment should:
Accelerated learning emphasizes the emotional and social aspects of the learning environment. Actually, the emotional atmosphere is more important than the physical space. Positive emotions accelerate learning, while negative emotions inhibit learning.
If the instructor just lectures and does not engage the learners it will negatively affect a person’s ability to learn. In contrast, if the instructors is enthusiastic and encourages learners to share ideas and participate it will positively affect a person’s ability to learn.
The classroom atmosphere should:
