Studying for Tests

When it comes to studying for tests, there a several important things a person can do.

The following is a list of items a person should do when preparing for studying for tests:

  • Spread out your review/study sessions over time.  Don’t try to do it all at once
  • Start studying early – two or three days prior to the test
  • Prioritize.  Make a list of what you intend to study, prioritize the list, and stick to it
  • If a study guide is supplied for tests, go through and write down most of the main points
  • If possible, study no more than 30-40 minutes at a stretch. Switch subjects every 20 minutes because the human brain has a hard time retaining information after 20 minutes.  Many students retain more by studying for short periods with breaks in between.
  • Take a 5-10-minute break every hour to move around and let your mind absorb what you’ve just been studying.  Take study breaks away from your desk or wherever you are studying. Let the break be a time to think about other things. Use some break time to reflect, not constantly review what you have just studied.
  • Utilize Collaboration – work together with a friend(s) or study group.
