Change Management

Change Management

Change management is a systematic approach to transitioning individuals, groups, and organizations from their current state to a desired future state.

Since change now occurs at a faster rate than ever before in human history, managing change is becoming an essential skill for leaders as well as for individuals in their personal lives.  The more effectively you deal with change, the more likely you are to succeed in future endeavors.

Change Management Process

The change management process is the sequence of steps or actions that a team or individual would follow to successfully implement a change.

A change management plan includes:

  1. Preparing for change
  2. Implementing  change
  3. Adapting to change
  4. Monitoring change
  5. Reinforcing change

Managing Change

When preparing for or managing change there are several key principles that need to be kept in mind:

  • Change means going from what is known and comfortable to what is unknown and uncomfortable
  • Different people react differently to change
  • People want to know why the change is necessary
  • Change can be stressful and fears must to be dealt with

In addition to the step above, there are several important elements that should be included in a change management plan including the following:

Communication

Communication is extremely important to a successful change.   Informing everyone, who will be affected by the changes, early on in the process is a key first step to change management.  It is important to make them aware of the change so that they can be mentally prepared for the change.  Give people the necessary information while being open and honest.   Ensure there is clear expression of the reasons and need for the change.   Also give them time to express their concerns and viewpoint.  Effective communication helps with getting buy-in from those affected.

Assessment and Plan

Another essential early step in to assess the impact of the changes on individuals and the organization.  Plan activities that are needed to address the impacts of the change.

Involve others

Involving people in the preparation stage helps build desire for change and helps ensure change is effective.  Also, involving knowledgeable people in the design and implementation of changes helps ensure the right changes are made.  These individuals can act as ambassadors for change.
